la basilique Sainte Anne

1

Bonlieu-sur-Roubion grew up around its monastery, whose basilica is part of the Provencal Romanesque movement.

Description

In 1171, on land donated by her sons, Countess Véronique de Marsanne built and founded a Cistercian abbey for women, which later became a priory of the Cistercian abbey of Valcroissant. Part of the 12th-century Romanesque abbey church remains. The abbey's founding charter mentions the marsanne grape variety for the first time in France. The abbey church was largely rebuilt in the late 19th century. It was listed as a historic monument on April 28, 1999. During the French Revolution, the buildings and land were sold to private individuals.
In 1871, a community of Norbertine nuns acquired, restored and rebuilt the monastery. The ruins of the site were raised thanks to private donations. After the anticlerical laws of 1905, the nuns were exiled to Grimbergen in Belgium. Later, the site became home to a small community of Premonstratensian monks attached to the Abbey of Mondaye in Normandy.
