“le banc du seigneur” ou banc de justice

But what kind of justice in Espeluche?

Description

This well-preserved 15th-century stone bench is listed as a Monument Historique.
Local tradition has always made it a Seigneurial Bench of Justice. In the past, justice was often dispensed outside, on a hill far from the center of the town. Then, little by little, the judicial authorities, local lords, representatives of the King, bishops and ecclesiastics appropriated the site and had specific buildings constructed.
This stone bench is located under an arcade with the distinctive feature of being supported on one side by a classical straight leg, and on the other by a corbel projecting from the wall.
